Understanding crappie behavior
Crappie are schooling fish that prefer structure and cover, such as brush piles, submerged timber, docks, and vegetation, which they use for protection and ambush feeding. Seasonal patterns are key: in spring, crappie move to shallow waters for spawning; in summer, they retreat to deeper, cooler areas; fall sees them following abundant food sources; and in winter, they school near underwater structures in deeper water. Water temperature also affects activity: below 50°F, crappie feed slowly, while 55–75°F is prime feeding, and above 80°F they feed mainly during low-light periods.
